Structuri verbale: gerunziu sau infinitiv

Introducere

Dacă folosim două verbe împreună într-o frază, de exemplu pentru a descrie o opinie sau o intenție despre o acțiune, cel de-al doilea verb ia fie forma de gerunziu, fie forma de infinitiv + "to".

Gerunziul se formează prin alăturarea "–ing" unui verb.

Unele verbe pot fi urmate doar de un gerunziu, altele pot fi urmate doar de un infinitiv + "to" iar unele verbe pot fi urmate de ambele forme verbale.

Exemple:

Doar gerunziu:

I fancy going to the cinema.

Doar infinitiv + "to":

I want to go to the cinema.

gerunziu sau infinitiv + "to":

I like going to the cinema.
I like to go to the cinema.
Nu este nicio diferență de sens în aceste exemple.

Cum se formează

Nu există reguli clare care să determine când folosim forma de gerunziu sau de infinitiv după verbul principal; Formele corecte trebuie învățate.

În continuare, câteva exemple (verbul principal este la timpul prezent simplu în exemplele următoare, dar aceeași formă a celui de-al doilea verb poate fi folosită și alături de alte timpuri verbale):

Aceste verbe pot fi urmate doar de un verb la gerunziu:

Aceste verbe pot fi urmate de un verb la gerunziu sau la infinitiv + to, păstrându-și același sens:

Aspecte gramaticale suplimentare

Unele verbe pot fi urmate de un verb la gerunziu sau la infinitiv, dar vor avea sensuri diferite:

I remember to close the windows.
remember to close: "remember" se întâmplă înainte de "to close" – I close the windows because I remember to do it (Închid ferestrele pentru că mi-am amintit să o fac)
I remember closing the windows.
remember closing: "remember" se întâmplă după "closing" – I closed the windows in the past and I remember it later (Am închis ferestrele în trecut și mi-am amintit mai târziu)

I tried to take the bus this morning but it was too crowded.
tried to take: Nu a fost posibil să iau autobuzul ("I tried" = Am încercat și nu am reușit)
I tried taking the bus this morning. It was very crowded.
tried taking: Nu iau autobuzul în mod obișnuit dar azi l-am luat ("I tried" = Am încercat)
