Past simple

Usiamo il past simple per descrivere:

• azioni finite nel passato:
  • "I studied for an exam."
• azioni finite in periodi di tempo passati:
  • "I studied for four years."
• abitudini del passato:
  • "I studied every night when I was at school."
• fatti passati:
  • "I studied history at university."

Past continuous

Usiamo il past continuous:

• per enfatizzare la natura progressiva di un'azione finita nel passato:
  • "I was studying for an exam all night."
• per descrivere un'azione progressiva che era in corso in un momento particolare:
  • "At 11am, I was visiting my grandmother."

Non usiamo il past continuous per abitudini nel passato: non "I was taking the bus to school."

Past continuous vs. past simple

Possiamo usare il past simple e il past continuous nella struttura della stessa frase con significati diversi:

• Il past simple descrive quando l'azione è cominciata:
  • "At 7am, I went to work."
    Questo significa che il viaggio verso il lavoro è cominciato alle 7 di mattina.
• Il past continuous descrive un'azione che era già in corso:
  • "At 7am, I was going to work."
    Questo significa che il viaggio verso il lavoro era già in corso alle 7 di mattina; è cominciato prima delle 7 di mattina.

Usando "when" e "while" per descrivere azioni che capitano contemporaneamente

"when" e past simple

Usiamo "when" con il past simple per descrivere due azioni una delle quali è il risultato dell'altra, o capita subito dopo:

• "I went downstairs when I heard the doorbell."
  o
  "When I heard the doorbell, I went downstairs."
  
  L'andare di sotto risulta dal sentire il campanello.
  
  
• "What did you do when the telephone rang?"
  Questa domanda chiede della tua azione come risultato dell'aver sentito il telefono.
  
  "I left the house."
  La risposta significa che appena dopo che il telefono è squillato, hai lasciato la casa (implicando che non hai risposto al telefono).

"when" with past continuous and past simple

Usiamo "when" con il past continuous e il past simple:

• per descrivere un'azione che era in corso (usando il past continuous) quando è successa un'altra azione (usando il past simple):
  • "I was studying history at university when I learnt to play the saxophone."
  
  
• per descrivere un'azione progressiva che era già in corso (usando il past continuous) e che è stata interrotta da un'azione più breve (usando il past simple):
  • "I was going downstairs when I heard the doorbell."
    o
    "When I heard the doorbell, I was going downstairs."
    L'azione di andare di sotto era già in corso ed è stata interrotta dal suono del campanello.
    
    
  • "What were you doing when the telephone rang?"
    Questa domanda chiede dell'azione che è stata interrotta quando il telefono è squillato.
    "I was leaving the house."
    La risposta vuol dire che prima che suonasse il telefono stavi già per uscire di casa (implicando che è possibile che tu abbia risposto al telefono).

"while"

Usiamo "while" con il past continuous per descrivere un'azione progressiva che era in corso contemporaneamente ad un'altra azione, usando o il past simple o il past continuous:

• "She read the newspaper while I was doing the gardening."
  o "While I was doing the gardening, she read the newspaper."
  
  
• "She was reading the newspaper while I was doing the gardening."
  o "While I was doing the gardening, she was reading the newspaper."
  
  
• "What were you doing while the telephone rang?" Questa domanda chiede della tua azione contemporanea allo squillo del telefono (implicando che stavi facendo qualcos'altro anzichè rispondere al telefono).
