Introduzione

Usiamo avverbi di grado per descrivere il grado (estensione o quantità) di un aggettivo, avverbio o verbo.

Possiamo usare "not" per formare il negativo con alcuni avverbi di grado.

Esempi

• Ad un grado eccessivo:
  • con un aggettivo:
    • "The book is too long."
    • "The book is not too long."
  • con un avverbio:
    • "She spoke too loudly."
    • "She didn't speak too loudly."
  • con un verbo:
    • ("too" con un verbo significa "as well" o "also" e non è un avverbio di grado. "He played the piano too.")
  
  
• Al massimo grado:
  • con un aggettivo:
    • "Their styles of painting are completely different."
    • "Their styles of painting are not completely different."
  • con un avverbio:
    • (Non usiamo "completely" con gli avverbi
  • con un verbo:
    • "They completely finished the meal."
    • "They did not completely finish the meal."
      or:
    • "They finished the meal completely."
    • "They didn’t finish the meal completely."
  
  
• Ad un ampio grado:
  • con un aggettivo:
    • "The walk was extremely tiring."
    • (di solito non usiamo "not")
  • con un avverbio:
    • "She ran extremely slowly."
    • (di solito non usiamo "not")
  • con un verbo:
    • (Non usiamo "extremely" con i verbi.)

  • con un aggettivo:
    • "That film was the most interesting."
    • "That film was the least interesting."

  • con un avverbio:
    • "They prepared the most carefully."

• Ad un grado moderato (di solito non usiamo "not"):
  • con un aggettivo:
    • "Their room is quite messy."
    • "Their room is fairly messy."
  • con un avverbio:
    • "She talks quite quietly."
    • "She talks fairly quietly."
  • con un verbo:
    • "I quite like swimming."
    • (Non usiamo "fairly" con i verbi.
  
  
• Ad un grado sufficiente:
  • con un aggettivo:
    • "Their house is big enough."
    • "Their house is not big enough."
  • con un avverbio:
    • "He works quickly enough."
    • "He doesn't work quickly enough."
  • con un verbo:
    • "They cooked enough for everyone."
    • "They didn't cook enough for everyone."
  
  
• Un po' meno del grado sufficiente (di solito non usiamo "not"):
  • con un aggettivo:
    • "Dinner is almost ready."
    • "Dinner is nearly ready."
  • con un avverbio (per confrontare):
    • "She finished almost as quickly."
    • "She finished nearly as quickly."
  • con un verbo:
    • "He has nearly completed the project."
    • "He has almost completed the project."

Forma - positiva

Di solito mettiamo l'avverbio di grado prima dell'aggettivo, dell'avverbio o del verbo principale (dopo i verbi ausiliari), ma in alcuni casi segue, come mostrato nella tabella:

Forma - negativa

Se usiamo "not" con un avverbio di grado, il significato negativo è per l'avverbio di grado e non descrive necessariamente l'opposto dell'aggettivo, avverbio o verbo che descrive:

• "The book is not very long."
  Questo non significa necessariamente che il libro sia corto; significa che il libro non è lungo ad un ampio grado (potrebbe essere lungo, abbastanza lungo, o anche corto, dipende dal contesto o dal tono che usiamo).

Forma

Con gli aggettivi usiamo "not" prima dell'avverbio di grado.

Con avverbi e verbi usiamo "not" nella forma negativa del verbo.

Con i verbi possiamo mettere l'avverbio di grado prima del verbo principale e dopo i verbi ausiliari o dopo il verbo principale (es. "She hasn't completely finished the meal." o "She hasn't finished the meal completely."):

"not really" può significare anche "not in reality":

• "He's not a really good cook."
  Significato: Non è un cuoco molto bravo.
  vs.
  "He isn't really a good cook."
  Significato: La realtà è che non è un bravo cuoco.
  
  
• "She isn’t really interested in the book."
  Significato: la realtà è che non è interessata al libro.
  
  
• "He isn’t really going to the party."
  Significato: la realtà è che non andrà alla festa.
