Introduzione

La struttura del first conditional viene usata per parlare di una possibilità nel futuro - qualcosa che accadrà o non accadrà nel futuro in base a certe condizioni che devono verificarsi.

Esempi

"If they win the match,	I will buy them dinner."
Se questo succede ...	... accadrà questo.
Se questo non succede ...	... non accadrà questo.

"If you study hard,

you will pass the exam."

"If she sings well,

she will win the competition."

Form

Una frase first conditional contiene due proposizioni: la proposizione con "if" e la proposizione principale.

Per creare la proposizione con "if", usiamo:
"if" + presente.

Per creare la proposizione principale, usiamo:
futuro.

La proposizione con "if" può essere messa prima o dopo. Il significato è lo stesso:

• If they are late, we will leave without them.
• We will leave without them if they are late.

Quando la proposizione con "if" viene messa per prima c'è una virgola tra le due proposizioni.

Possiamo usare "when" al posto di "if":

• "if" esprime una possibilità
• "when" significa che è una certezza.

Per esempio:

• If I get home late, we won’t have dinner.
• When I get home, we’ll have dinner.

Possiamo usare "unless" al posto di "if".

"Unless" significa "except if" o "if + not".

• "You won't be promoted unless you complete the project on time."
• "Unless you pay the fine, the police will take your car."
