Introduzione

Usiamo "this" / "that" / "these" / "those" come aggettivi e pronomi dimostrativi per identificare la cosa o le cose di cui stiamo parlando.

Aggettivi dimostrativi:

• I like this book.
• That book is expensive.
• She loves these books.
• I want those books.

Pronomi dimostrativi:

• Whose book is this?
• That is my book.
• These are mine.
• I want these, not those.

Forma 1 – aggettivi dimostrativi

Usiamo "this" / "that" / "these" / "those" come aggettivi dimostrativi con un sostantivo:
aggettivo dimostrativo + sostantivo.

• Usiamo "this" e "these" per cose che sono vicine a noi nello spazio e nel tempo ("vicino").
• Usiamo "that" e "those" per cose che sono lontane da noi o che non possiamo vedere ("lontano").

Esempi:

  • This food is expensive.
• Plurale / vicino:
  • Are these shoes yours?
• Singolare / lontano:
  • That film is very long.
• Plurale / lontano:

Forma 2 – pronomi dimostrativi

Usiamo "this" / "that" / "these" / "those" come pronomi dimostrativi:

• senza un nome, se il nome al quale ci riferiamo è chiaro, per esempio perchè lo puoi vedere:
  • Singolare:
    • I own this.
  • Plurale:
    • My sister loves these.
  • Singolare:
    • Sarah doesn’t like that.
  • Plurale:
    • My brother has those.
    
    
• con "be" prima del sostantivo:

  • 	Singolare	Plurale
    Positivo	this is ... that is ...	these are ... those are ...
    Negativo	this isn't ... that isn't ...	these aren't ... those aren't ...
    domanda	is this ... ? is that ... ?	are these ... ? are those ... ?

  • Singolare:
    • This is a good book.

• con "be" e aggettivi e pronomi possessivi:
  • Singolare:
    • This is mine.

Possiamo usare "this" / "these" per differenziare da "that" / "those" e per evitare di ripetere il sostantivo:

• Singolare:
  • I don't like that. I prefer this.
• Plurale:
  • "Are these books yours?" "No, those are mine."
