Introduzione

Possiamo usare come aggettivi i participi presente e passato dei verbi che descrivono un effetto su qualcosa.

Usiamo il participio presente (che termina in "–ing") come aggettivo per descrivere come il soggetto causa l'effetto. Usiamo il participio passato (che termina in "–ed") come aggettivo per descrivere come il soggetto subisce l'effetto.

Esempi:

Dalla radice del verbo "surprise":

• "David is surprising."
  David causes surprise.
• "David is surprised."
  David experiences surprise.

Forma: -ed o -ing?

Ecco alcuni esempi di participi di verbi che possono essere usati come aggettivi:

Esempi

Usiamo participi come aggettivi allo stesso modo di altri aggettivi, per esempio:

con "be":

• "The food is disappointing".
  The food causes disappointment.
• "We are disappointed by the food."
  We experience disappointment.

• "The race was exhausting".
  The race caused exhaustion.
• "They were exhausted after they finished the race."
  They experienced exhaustion.

prima di un sostantivo:

• "It was a satisfying meal."
  The meal caused satisfaction.
• "He was a satisfied customer."
  The customer experienced satisfaction.
