Introducción

Se usa "there is" / "there are" con cuantificadores para describir cantidades de sustantivos sin usar números.

Ejemplos

there is:
• There is some milk.
• Is there enough coffee?
• There isn’t any money.
there are:
• There are some chairs.
• Are there many people?
• There aren’t enough eggs.

Forma "there is" / "there are" + sustantivos

Sustantivos

There are two types of noun: countable and uncountable nouns. Hay dos tipos de sustantivos: contables e incontables .

• Sustantivos contables : Un sustantivo que se puede contar usando números. Sólo los sustantivos contables pueden ser plurales (más o menos de uno):
  • "one chair" (singular)
  • "zero eggs" (plural)
  • "hundreds of people" (plural)
  
  
• sustantivos incontables : Un sustantivo que no se puede contar usando números. Los tratamos como singular y sin "a" / "an":
  • "water"
  • "time"
  • "money"

Se usa "there is" con sustantivos contables en singular y con todos los sustantivos incontables.

Se usa "there are" con sustantivos contables en plural.

Ejemplos

    • "There is an egg."
  • negative:
    • "There isn’t (is not) time."
  • question:
    • "Is there milk?"
• there are
  • positive:
    • "There are zero eggs."
  • negative:
    • "There aren’t (are not) hundreds of people."

Forma "there is" / "there are" + cuantificadores + sustantivo

Se usa "there is" / "there are" + cuantificadores para describir cantidades generales tanto de los sustantivos incontables como de los contables (sin usar números).

No todos los cuantificadores se pueden usar tanto con los sustantivos contables como con los incontables:

much	-	una gran cantidad (normalmente sólo formas negativas / interrogativas)
-	many	una gran cantidad
not much	not many	no una cantidad grande
too much	too many	más grande que la cantidad requerida

• Afirmativo:
  • "There is some milk."
• Negativo:
  • "There isn’t (is not) enough coffee."
• Interrogativa:
  • "Is there any water?"

"there are" + cuantificador + sustantivo contable plural

• Afirmativo:
  • "There are lots of reports."
• Negativo:
  • "There aren’t many people."
• Interrogativa:
  • "Are there too many eggs?"
