Introduction et forme

Pour former une question, on met le verbe auxiliaire avant le sujet.

Affirmatif:

Carl	likes	chocolate.
Objet	verbe	objet

Forme interrogative:

Does	Carl	like	chocolate?
Verbe auxiliaire	Objet	verbe	objet

Exemples:

Quand le verbe "be" est le verbe principal, on n'a pas besoin d'un verbe auxiliaire, par exemple:

• Are you an accountant?
• Was he tired?
• Am I late?
• Were they at home?

Le pronom interrogatif représente la chose dont on parle - c'est ce que l'on veut savoir.

Exemples:

Questions indirectes

Les questions indirectes sont plus polies que les questions directes.

Elles sont généralement introduites par des expressions comme:

• Could you tell me…
• Do you know…
• Do you have any idea…

Exemple:

• Could you tell me what time it is, please?
• Do you know how to get to the bus station?
• Do you have any idea how much the tickets are?

Veuillez noter que l'expression d'introduction contient la question:

• "Could you tell me ..." – le sujet et le verbe auxiliaire sont inversés

L'ordre des mots dans la phrase secondaire reste normal:

• "Could you tell me what time it is, please?" not - "Could you tell me what time is it, please?"

Questions tags

Les questions tags sont placés à la fin d'une phrase affirmative et, selon l'intonation, sont généralement utilisés pour demander à l'interlocuteur de confirmer ou d'être d'accord avec ce que l'on dit.

Les questions tags sont formés avec le verbe auxiliaire et le sujet:

• You’re tired today, aren’t you?
• He didn’t finish the work, did he?
• They haven’t been to Asia, have they?

Veuillez noter qu'une phrase affirmative aura un question tag négatif, et une phrase négative aura un question tag positif.
