Introduction

On utilise le premier conditionel pour exprimer une possibilité dans le futur - quelque chose qui se passera ou ne se passera pas dans le futur si certaines conditions sont respectées.

Exemples

"If they win the match,	I will buy them dinner."
Si cela se produit...	... cela se produira.
Si cela ne se produit pas...	... cela ne se produira pas.

"If you study hard,

you will pass the exam."

"If she sings well,

she will win the competition."

Form

Une phrase au premier conditionnel contient deux propositions: la proposition avec "if" et la proposition principale.

Pour former la proposition avec "if", on utilise:
"if" + le présent.

Pour former la proposition principale, on utilise:
le futur.

La proposition avec "if" peut être placée en premier ou en deuxième. Le sens est exactement le même:

• If they are late, we will leave without them.
• We will leave without them if they are late.

Si on met la proposition avec "if" en premier, il faut mettre une virgule entre les deux propositions.

On peut utiliser "when" à la place de "if":

• "if" sous-entend une possibilité
• "when" sous-entend une certitude.

Par exemple:

• If I get home late, we won’t have dinner.
• When I get home, we’ll have dinner.

Point de langue pour niveau intermédiaire

On peut utiliser "unless" à la place de "if".

"Unless" signifie "except if" ou "if + not".

• "You won't be promoted unless you complete the project on time."
• "Unless you pay the fine, the police will take your car."

Les deux phrases suivantes veulent dire la même chose:

• "If you don't read the book, you can't review it."
• "Unless you read the book, you can't review it."
