Introduction

On peut utiliser les participes présent et passé de verbes qui décrivent un effet sur quelque chose comme adjectifs.

On utilise le participe présent (avec la terminaison "–ing") comme adjectif pour décrire comment le sujet provoque l'effet. On utilise le participe passé (avec la terminaison "–ed") comme adjectif pour décrire comment le sujet subit l'effet.

Exemples:

Avec la racine du verbe "surprise":

• "David is surprising."
  David causes surprise.
• "David is surprised."
  David experiences surprise.

Forme: -ed ou -ing?

Exemples

On utilise les participes comme adjectifs de la même façon que d'autres adjectifs, par exemple:

avec "be":

• "The food is disappointing".
  The food causes disappointment.
• "We are disappointed by the food."
  We experience disappointment.

• "The race was exhausting".
  The race caused exhaustion.
• "They were exhausted after they finished the race."
  They experienced exhaustion.

avant un nom:

• "It was a satisfying meal."
  The meal caused satisfaction.
• "He was a satisfied customer."
  The customer experienced satisfaction.
