Plus-que-parfait

Introduction

On utilise le plus-que-parfait ("past perfect") pour décrire:

des actions qui se sont terminées avant une autre action ou évènement passé
des faits ou expériences qui étaient vrais avant une action ou un évènement passé.

Exemples:

They had taken many French lessons by the time they moved to France.
Ils ont été en France dans le passé. Ils ont pris des cours de français avant ça.
I hadn't eaten Mexican food before I went to Mexico last August.
J'ai mangé de la nourriture mexicaine pour la première fois quand je suis allé au Mexique en août l'année dernière.

Formation

On forme le plus-que-parfait avec "had" + participe passé:

Positif	I / You / We / They He / She / It	'd had	been	there before.
Négatif		hadn't had not

Exemples

I had been to Thailand twice before I got a job there.
J'ai trouvé un travail en Thaïlande dans le passé. Je suis allé en Thaïlande deux fois avant ça.
He hadn’t heard Mozart’s music when he bought the tickets for the concert.
Je n'ai pas entendu la musique de Mozart avant d'acheter des billets pour le concert.
Had they read the book before they saw the film?
Ils ont vu le film dans le passé. Ont-ils lu le livre avant ça?
