Introduction

On utilise "this" / "that" / 'these" / "those" comme pronoms ou adjectifs démonstratifs pour identifier de quoi on parle.

Adjectifs démonstratifs :

• I like this book.
• That book is expensive.
• She loves these books.
• I want those books.

Pronoms démonstratifs :

• Whose book is this?
• That is my book.
• These are mine.
• I want these, not those.

Forme 1 – adjectifs démonstratifs

On utilise "this" / "that" / "these" / "those" comme adjectifs démonstratifs avec un nom:
adjectif démonstratif + nom.

• On utilise "this" et "these" pour des choses qui sont proches de nous physiquement et dans le temps ("near").
• On utilise "that" et "those" pour des choses qui sont loin de nous ou que nous ne pouvons pas voir ("far").

Exemples:

• singulier / proche:
  • This food is expensive.
• pluriel / proche:
  • Are these shoes yours?
• singulier / loin:
  • That film is very long.
• pluriel / loin:
  • Those books aren’t mine.

Forme 2 – pronoms démonstratifs

On utilise "this" / "that" / "these" / "those" comme pronoms démonstratifs:

• sans un nom, si le nom dont nous parlons est clair, par exemple quand on peut le voir :
  • singulier:
    • I own this.
  • pluriel:
    • My sister loves these.
  • singulier:
    • Sarah doesn’t like that.
  • pluriel:
    • My brother has those.
    
    
• avec "be" avant le nom:

  • 	singulier	pluriel
    Positif	this is ... that is ...	these are ... those are ...
    Négatif	this isn't ... that isn't ...	these aren't ... those aren't ...
    Forme interrogative	is this ... ? is that ... ?	are these ... ? are those ... ?

  • singulier:
    • This is a good book.
  • pluriel:
    • These are pretty flowers.
  • singulier:
    • That is a good book.
  • pluriel:
    • Those are pretty flowers.
  
  
• avec "be" et des pronoms et adjectifs possessifs:
  • singulier:
    • This is mine.
  • pluriel:
    • These aren't hers.
  • singulier:
    • Is that her bag?
  • pluriel:
    • Are those your shoes?

On peut utiliser "this" / "these" pour faire la différence entre "that" / "those" et pour éviter de répéter le nom:

• singulier:
  • I don't like that. I prefer this.
• pluriel:
  • "Are these books yours?" "No, those are mine."
