Introducere

Folosim adverbe de grad pentru a descrie gradul (dimensiunea sau cantitatea) unui adjectiv, adverb sau verb.

Putem folosi "not" pentru a exprima forma negativă a unor adverbe de grad.

Exemple

• În exces:
  • cu un adjectiv:
    • "The book is too long."
    • "The book is not too long."
  • cu un adverb:
    • "She spoke too loudly."
    • "She didn't speak too loudly."
  • cu un verb:
    • ("too" folosit alături de un verb înseamnă "as well" sau "also" (de asemenea) și nu reprezintă un adverb de grad. "He played the piano too." – Și el cântă la pian.)
  
  
• La un nivel maxim
  • cu un adjectiv:
    • "Their styles of painting are completely different."
    • "Their styles of painting are not completely different."
  • cu un adverb:
    • (Nu folosim "completely" alături de adverbe
  • cu un verb:
    • "They completely finished the meal."
    • "They did not completely finish the meal."
      or:
    • "They finished the meal completely."
    • "They didn’t finish the meal completely."
  
  
• În foarte mare măsură:
  • cu un adjectiv:
    • "The walk was extremely tiring."
    • (în general, nu se folosește "not")
  • cu un adverb:
    • "She ran extremely slowly."
    • (în general, nu se folosește "not")
  • cu un verb:
    • (Nu folosim "extremely" cu verbe.)
  
  
• Într-o mai mare / mai mică măsură decât toți ceilalți (a se vedea și foaia de lucru despre comparative și superlative):
  • cu un adjectiv:
    • "That film was the most interesting."
    • "That film was the least interesting."
    • "That film was not the most interesting."
    • "That film was not the least interesting."
  • cu un adverb:
    • "They prepared the most carefully."
    • "They prepared the least carefully."
    • "They didn’t prepare the most carefully."
    • "They didn’t prepare the least carefully."
  • cu un verb:
    • "I like chocolate the most."
    • "I like chocolate the least."
    • "I don’t like chocolate the most."
    • "I don’t like chocolate the least."
  
  
• Într-o mai mare / mai mică măsură decât altcineva sau decât câțiva alții (a se vedea și foaia de lucru despre comparative și superlative) (în general, nu se folosește "not"):

  • cu un adverb:
    • "Can you speak more loudly please?"

  • cu un verb:
    • "She reads more than her brother."

• În mare măsură:
  • cu un adjectiv:
    • "The countryside is so beautiful."
    • "The countryside is very beautiful."
    • "The countryside is not very beautiful."

    • "The countryside is not really beautiful."
  • cu un adverb:
    • "She paints so well."
    • "She paints very well."
    • "She paints really well."
    • "She doesn't paint so well."

  • cu un verb:
    • "She really enjoyed the film."
    • "She really didn’t enjoy the film."
    • (Mai puțin comun: "She so enjoyed the film.")
    • (Nu folosim "very" cu verbe.)
    • (Nu folosim "not" cu "so".)
  
  
• Un nivel moderat (în general, nu se folosește "not"):
  • cu un adjectiv:
    • "Their room is quite messy."
    • "Their room is fairly messy."
  • cu un adverb:
    • "She talks quite quietly."
    • "She talks fairly quietly."
  • cu un verb:
    • "I quite like swimming."
    • (Nu folosim "fairly" cu verbe.
  
  
• La un nivel suficient
  • cu un adjectiv:
    • "Their house is big enough."
    • "Their house is not big enough."
  • cu un adverb:
    • "He works quickly enough."
    • "He doesn't work quickly enough."
  • cu un verb:
    • "They cooked enough for everyone."
    • "They didn't cook enough for everyone."
  
  
• Un pic mai puțin decât suficient (în general, nu se folosește "not"):
  • cu un adjectiv:
    • "Dinner is almost ready."
    • "Dinner is nearly ready."
  • cu un adverb (pentru a compara):
    • "She finished almost as quickly."
    • "She finished nearly as quickly."
  • cu un verb:
    • "He has nearly completed the project."
    • "He has almost completed the project."

Forma afirmativă

În general, plasăm adverbul de grad înaintea adjectivului, adverbului sau a verbului principal (după verbele auxiliare) dar, în anumite cazuri, îl plasăm la final, conform indicațiilor din tabel:

Forma negativă

Dacă folosim "not" cu un adverb de grad, sensul negativ este pentru adverbul de grad și nu descrie neapărat opusul adjectivului, adverbului sau verbului pe care îl însoțește:

• "The book is not very long." – Cartea nu este foarte lungă
  Nu înseamnă neapărat că aceasta este scurtă; înseamnă că nu este lungă într-o anumită măsură (ar putea fi lungă, destul de lungă, sau chiar scurtă, în funcție de context sau de tonul pe care îl folosim)

Cum se formează

Pentru adjective, folosim "not" înaintea adverbului de grad.

Pentru adverbe și verbe, folosim "not" în forma negativă a verbului.

În cazul verbelor, putem plasa adverbul de grad înaintea verbului principal și după verbele auxiliare, sau după verbul principal (ex: "She hasn't completely finished the meal." sau "She hasn't finished the meal completely."):

"not really" poate să însemne și "not in reality":

• "He's not a really good cook."
  Înțeles: Nu este un bun bucătar (într-o mare măsură).
  versus:
  "He isn't really a good cook."
  Înțeles: Realitatea este că el nu este un bun bucătar.
  
  
• "She isn’t really interested in the book."
  Înțeles: Realitatea este că nu o interesează cartea.
  
  
• "He isn’t really going to the party."
  Înțeles: Realitatea este că el nu va merge la petrecere.
