Introducere

Folosim "this" / "that" / "these" / "those" ca adjective și pronume demonstrative pentru a identifica la ce ne referim.

Adjective demonstrative:

• I like this book.
• That book is expensive.
• She loves these books.
• I want those books.

Pronume demonstrative:

• Whose book is this?
• That is my book.
• These are mine.
• I want these, not those.

Forma nr. 1 – adjective demonstrative

Folosim "this" / "that" / "these" / "those" ca adjective demonstrative alături de un substantiv:
adjectiv demonstrativ + substantiv.

• Folosim "this" și "these" pentru obiecte care sunt aproape de noi ca timp și loc ("near" – aproape)
• Folosim "that" și "those" pentru obiecte care sunt departe de noi sau pe care nu le putem vedea ("far" - departe)

Exemple:

• Singular / aproape:
  • This food is expensive.
• Plural / aproape:
  • Are these shoes yours?
• Singular / departe:
  • That film is very long.
• Plural / departe:
  • Those books aren’t mine.

Forma nr. 2 – pronume demonstrative

Folosim "this" / "that" / "these" / "those" ca pronume demonstrative:

• fără un substantiv, dacă substantivul despre care vorbim este clar, de exemplu dacă îl puteți vedea:
  • Singular:
    • I own this.
  • Plural:
    • My sister loves these.
  • Singular:
    • Sarah doesn’t like that.
  • Plural:
    • My brother has those.
    
    
• cu "be" înaintea substantivului:

  • 	Singular	Plural
    Pozitiv	this is ... that is ...	these are ... those are ...
    Negativ	this isn't ... that isn't ...	these aren't ... those aren't ...
    Forma interogativă	is this ... ? is that ... ?	are these ... ? are those ... ?

  • Singular:
    • This is a good book.
  • Plural:
    • These are pretty flowers.
  • Singular:
    • That is a good book.
  • Plural:
    • Those are pretty flowers.
  
  
• cu "be" și adjective și pronume posesive:
  • Singular:
    • This is mine.
  • Plural:
    • These aren't hers.
  • Singular:
    • Is that her bag?
  • Plural:
    • Are those your shoes?

Putem folosi "this" / "these" pentru a le diferenția față de "that" / "those" și pentru a evita repetarea substantivului:

• Singular:
  • I don't like that. I prefer this.
• Plural:
  • "Are these books yours?" "No, those are mine."
