Εισαγωγή

Το πρώτο είδος υποθετικού λόγου χρησιμοποιείται για να μιλήσουμε για μια πιθανότητα στο μέλλον - κάτι που θα συμβεί ή που δε θα συμβεί στο μέλλον ανάλογα με συγκεκριμένες συνθήκες που θα συναντήσουμε.

Παραδείγματα

"If they win the match,	I will buy them dinner."
Αν αυτό συμβεί...	... αυτό θα συμβεί.
Αν αυτό δε συμβεί...	... αυτό δε θα συμβεί.

"If you study hard,

you will pass the exam."

"If she sings well,

she will win the competition."

Form

Μία υποθετική πρόταση πρώτου είδους, περιλαμβάνει δύο προτάσεις: την πρόταση "if" και την κύρια πρόταση.

Για να φτιάξουμε την πρόταση "if", χρησιμοποιούμε:
"if" +παροντικό χρόνο.

Για να φτιάξουμε την κύρια πρόταση, χρησιμοποιούμε:
μελλοντικό χρόνο.

Η πρόταση "if" μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί πρώτη ή δεύτερη. Η σημασία είναι ακριβώς η ίδια:

• If they are late, we will leave without them.
• We will leave without them if they are late.

Όταν η πρόταση "if" χρησιμοποιείται πρώτη, υπάρχει ένα κόμμα ανάμεσα στις προτάσεις.

Μπορούμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε "when" στη θέση του "if":

• Το "if" υπονοεί πιθανότητα
• Το "when" υπονοεί βεβαιότητα.

Για παράδειγμα:

• If I get home late, we won’t have dinner.
• When I get home, we’ll have dinner.

Μπορούμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε "unless" στη θέση του "if".

Το "unless" σημαίνει "εκτός και αν" ή "αν + δεν".

• "You won't be promoted unless you complete the project on time."
• "Unless you pay the fine, the police will take your car."

Οι δύο ακόλουθες προτάσεις έχουν την ίδια σημασία:
