Einführung

Wir verwenden die If-Clauses Typ 3 zur Beschreibung unwirklicher Situationen und der vermeintlichen Ergebnisse in der Vergangenheit. Sowohl das Ereignis als auch das Ergebnis liegen in der Vergangenheit. Die Situation ist nicht eingetreten und somit ist das Ergebnis nicht möglich:

    If I had woken up earlier, I wouldn’t have missed the train.     

• „If I had woken up earlier" („Wenn ich früher aufgewacht wäre") ist die unwirkliche Situation.
• „I wouldn’t have missed the train" („hätte ich den Zug nicht verpasst“) ist das vermeintliche Ergebnis.

    The real situation and result: Ich wachte nicht früher auf und verpasste so den Zug.

Beispiele:

• If she hadn't got the job, she would have been very disappointed.
  Die reale Situation und das Ergebnis: Sie bekam den Job und war somit nicht enttäuscht.
   
• If they had known about the problems with the trains, they would have driven.
  Die reale Situation und das Ergebnis: Sie wussten nichts über die Probleme mit den Zügen, so fuhren sie nicht.
   
• Would I have got sick if I hadn’t eaten the fish?
  Die reale Situation und das Ergebnis: Ich aß den Fisch. Wurde ich deshalb krank?

Form

Wir bilden If-Clauses Typ 3 mit einem Bedingungssatz und einem Hauptsatz:

• Bedingungssatz: „if" + Past Perfect
• Hauptsatz: „would have" + Partizip Perfekt

Die Reihenfolge der Sätze spielt keine Rolle: die Bedeutung ist die gleiche.

Wenn wir den Bedingungssatz vor den Hauptsatz setzen, verwenden wir ein Komma:

Bedingungssatz	Hauptsatz
„If" + Past Perfect + Komma	„would have“ + Partizip Perfekt
If I’d woken up earlier,	I wouldn’t have missed the train.
If she hadn’t got the job,	she would have been very disappointed.
If they had known about the problems with the trains,	they would have driven instead.
If I hadn’t eaten the fish,	would I have got sick?

Wir verwenden kein Komma, wenn wir den Hauptsatz vor den Bedingungssatz setzen:

Hauptsatz	Bedingungssatz
„would have“ + Partizip Perfekt	„If" + Past Perfect
I wouldn’t have missed the train	if I had woken up earlier.
She would have been very disappointed	if she hadn’t got the job.
They would have driven	if they had known about the problems with the trains.
Would I have got sick	if I hadn’t eaten the fish?

• Wir können das Subjektpronomen und „would" zusammenziehen: „I’d" / „you’d" / „we’d" / „they’d" / „she’d" / „he’d" / „it’d"
   
• Wir können „would“ und „have" zusammenziehen: would’ve
   
• Wir können das Past Perfect Continuous im Bedingungssatz verwenden:
  If I’d been looking more carefully, I would have noticed the mistake.
  Ich habe den Fehler nicht bemerkt, weil ich nicht genau genug hinsah.

Die Verwendung von „could", „might“

Wir können „could“ oder „might“ anstelle von „would“ im Hauptsatz von If-Clauses Typ 3 verwenden.

• If they had known about the problems with the trains, they would have driven.
  Der Hauptsatz mit „would“ beschreibt ein bestimmtes Ergebnis.
   
• If they had known about the problems with the trains, they could have driven.
  Der Hauptsatz mit „could“ beschreibt ein mögliches Ergebnis als eine Fähigkeit, etwas zu tun.
   
• If they had known about the problems with the trains, they might have driven.
  Der Hauptsatz mit „might“ beschreibt ein mögliches Ergebnis.
