Introdução

Podemos usar os particípios presentes e passados de verbos que descrevem um efeito que é feito em algo como adjetivos.

Nós usamos o particípio presente (que termina com “ing") como um adjetivo para descrever como o sujeito causa o efeito. Nós usamos o particípio passado (terminando com "ed") como um adjetivo para descrever como o sujeito experimenta o efeito.

Exemplos:

Da raiz do verbo "surpresa":

• "David is surprising."
  David causes surprise.
• "David is surprised."
  David experiences surprise.

Formas: -ed ou -ing?

Aqui estão alguns exemplos de particípios de verbos que podem ser usados como adjetivos:

Exemplos

Usamos particípios como adjetivos, da mesma forma que outros adjetivos, por exemplo:

com "be":

• "The food is disappointing".
  The food causes disappointment.
• "We are disappointed by the food."
  We experience disappointment.

• "The race was exhausting".
  The race caused exhaustion.
• "They were exhausted after they finished the race."
  They experienced exhaustion.

antes de um substantivo:

• "It was a satisfying meal."
  The meal caused satisfaction.
• "He was a satisfied customer."
  The customer experienced satisfaction.
