Pronomes relativos - uma introdução

who, which, that

Cláusulas relativas nos dizem sobre qual pessoa ou coisa alguém está falando, ou nos dá mais informações sobre essa pessoa ou coisa.

Usamos "who", "which" e "that" como pronomes relativos para:

• substituir o sujeito ou objeto
• introduzir uma cláusula relativa
• conectar cláusulas separadas juntas em uma única frase.

Exemplo

1. The man is an English teacher. He lives in London.

No segundo exemplo, "who" introduz a cláusula relativa. A cláusula relativa deve ter um sujeito para que "who" substitua "He", pois não podemos repetir "He" ou "The man".

A cláusula relativa diz ao ouvinte o homem o qual o orador está falando.

Nós usamos

• "who" para pessoas
• "which" para coisas
• "that" para pessoas e coisas.
