"wish"

Putem folosi "wish":

• pentru a exprima o dorință pentru o acțiune din viitor pe un ton formal sau politicos:
  "I wish to attend the meeting."
• pentru a-i dori ceva cuiva în viitor, de obicei cu ajutorul unor expresii ca:
  "I wish him the best of luck."

"wish" / "if only"

Putem folosi "wish" și "if only" pentru a exprima o dorință puțin probabil sau imposibil de îndeplinit sau un regret:

• cu trecutul simplu pentru a exprima o dorință imposibil de îndeplinit în prezent:
  • "I wish I lived in the countryside."
  • "If only I lived in the countryside."
    Nu locuiesc în mediul rural în prezent, deci această dorință este imposibilă.
  
  
• cu mai mult ca perfectul (past perfect) pentru a exprima un regret legat de trecut:
  • "I wish I hadn't eaten the prawns."
  • "If only I hadn't eaten the prawns."
    Regret că am mâncat creveții în trecut.
  
  
• cu would/could pentru a exprima o dorință pe care o considerăm puțin probabil sau imposibil de realizat în prezent:
  • "I wish he would save money."
  • "I wish he could save money."
  • "If only he would save money."
  • "If only he could save money."
    nu "I wish he will/can save money."
    Nu cred că poate sau că va economisi bani, deci este o dorință imposibilă legată de posibilitatea lui de a face economii în prezent.

Modul conjunctiv

Expresiile în care folosim "wish" și "if only" sunt exemple ale modului conjunctiv (subjonctiv), utilizat pentru a exprima dorințe puțin probabil sau imposibil de realizat (sau recomandări, fără "wish"/"if only"). În modul conjunctiv, se folosește doar "were" (nu "was"):

• cu trecutul simplu al "be":
  • "I wish he were on holiday."
  • "If only he were on holiday."
  • (nu "was here")
    Nu este în vacanță, deci aceasta este o dorință imposibil de realizat în prezent.
  
  
• cu trecutul continuu:
  • "I wish I were going on holiday."
  • "If only I were going on holiday."
  • (nu "was going")
    Nu plec în vacanță, deci această dorință este imposibil de realizat în prezent sau în viitor.

Propoziții condiționale

Putem folosi "wish" și "if only" pentru a descrie o situație imaginară sau imposibilă din trecut sau prezent, urmată de o propoziție principală care descrie rezultatul imaginat.

Fraza condițională de tipul 2 (link to worksheet) pentru a exprima dorințe imposibile în prezent:

• "If only I didn't have a headache, I would/could go to the party tonight."
• "I wish I didn't have a headache, then I would/could go to the party tonight."
  Situația reală și rezultatul: Mă doare capul așa că intenția sau capacitatea de a merge la petrecere în prezent este un rezultat imaginat.

Fraza condițională de tipul 3 (link to worksheet):

• "If only I'd taken the train, I would have arrived at the destination by now."
• "I wish I'd taken the train; I would have arrived at the destination by now."
  Situația reală și rezultatul: Nu am luat trenul și nu am ajuns la destinație așa că acesta este un rezultat imaginat în trecut.

Cum se formează - "wish"

Folosim prezentul simplu al "wish" pentru a exprima o dorință din prezent pentru o situație din viitor.

• Pentru a exprima o dorință pe un ton formal sau politicos:
  subiect + "wish" + "to" + infinitiv

  Folosim punct și virgulă (;) pentru a uni propozițiile într-o singură frază. În acest caz, nu folosim "then" deoarece așteptarea sau posibilitatea legată de ora sosirii este plasată în același timp în care am lua trenul. Nu putem inversa ordinea propozițiilor așa cum putem să o facem cu "if only":
