Should

Folosim "should" pentru a oferi sau a cere un sfat sau o părere în prezent:

• "I have a terrible stomachache." "You should go to the doctor's."
• "I haven’t heard from my father." "You should call him."
• "She's not happy with the salary offered." "She shouldn't accept the job."

Cum se formează

Folosim "should" / "shouldn't" + infinitivul verbului principal (fără "to")

Exemplu

I You He, She, It We They	should	do	more exercise.
		get	a new car.
	shouldn't (should not)	smoke.
		spend	so much money.

Should have

Folosim "should have" pentru a oferi sau a cere o părere în momentul prezent referitoare la o acțiune care a avut loc în trecut:

• "I had a terrible stomachache." "You should have gone to the doctor’s."
• "I didn’t hear from my father last week." "You should have called him."
• "She isn't happy with the salary she’s getting." "She shouldn't have accepted the job."

Cum se formează

Folosim "should" / "shouldn't have" + participiul trecut (past participle) al verbului principal

Exemplu

I You He / She / It We They	should have	taken	a taxi.
	shouldn't have	written	that comment.

"Have to" este folosit pentru a evidenția obligația unei persoane de a realiza o acțiune, de obicei impusă din exterior, însă poate fi folosit și pentru a exprima o părere:

• You have to show your passport at passport control.
  (Aceasta e legea.)
• Jenny has to do homework every evening.
  (Părinții ei i-au spus să își facă temele.)
• Tom had to work late last night.
  (Nu își terminase treaba)
• You have to tell him!
  (Aceasta este opinia mea (puternică))
• You don’t have to eat that if you don’t like it.
  (Nu te oblig să mănânci)

Cum se formează

Prezentul simplu al verbului "have" + "to" + infinitiv (fără "to")
or
The past simple of 'have' + to + infinitive (without to)

Must

"Must" este folosit și pentru a exprima o obligație, reguli scrise și instrucțiuni:

• You must submit your proposal by noon on 12th July.
• You must not use a calculator during the exam.

"Must" este, de asemenea, folosit pentru a oferi o recomandare puternică:

• You must tell him before it's too late.
• You mustn't be late for work on your first day.

Cum se formează

"must" sau "mustn't" ("must not") + verbul la infinitiv (fără "to")

Exemplu

I You He / She / It We They	must mustn't	report	the theft to the police immediately.
		forget	to transfer the money.

Chiar dacă întrebările care conțin "must" sunt corecte din punct de vedere gramatical, "have to" este folosit cu preponderență pentru a formula o întrebare.

Nu există forma la timpul trecut pentru "must" exprimând o obligație:

• We had to show our passports at the border.
• We weren’t allowed to use calculators in the exam.
  Or, we couldn’t use calculators in the exam.
